As an independent fashion blogger or boutique owner no doubt you have recently experienced extra-crunchy-credit-crunchiness

–either on a commercial level or on a personal level. If you must advertise to get yourself noticed, here are some points to consider from someone who has recently seen it all: [Read more]

Make Money with Affiliate Programs

If you’re blogging for extra cash, there are easier ways to make money.

However, if you are going to be writing about what you love, you might as well make extra money if it’s only going to take a few extra steps.

Affiliate Programs can work, if you know how to use them. Personally, I’ve had my share of rage/resentment when it comes to affiliate programs, as I put an ‘ad’ up on my blog for months and only bring in a few cents. It took some time before I was able to figure out ways to make money off them, without comprising editorial content. [Read more]

Social Bookmarking: Keep Your Fabulous Finds Organized

What is social bookmarking?

To tell the truth, I was very confused when I first heard of it. Luckily, in the days before I started blogging, I had been invited by a friend to the Stylehive.com launch party. Though free food and goodie bag was the main motivation sit through the presentation, I did get to learn about social bookmarking, and how this website can organize your finds through keywords. At the time I was confused why anyone would need this, Stylehive’s usefulness soon became apparent when I started blogging and my bookmarks folder was overflowing with websites I couldn’t remember. Doing research can be fun…

But it can take hours, days, weeks, months to get a good selection of resources compiled to make finding new content easier. As a fashion blogger, knowing where to find the good shops can be very difficult in the sea of online shopping. While some of us are happy with some of the more mainstream sites, others are on a quest to find the little boutiques featuring lesser known and more unique designers. Ara Anjargolian has created a resource to make our lives a whole lot easier. Since January 2005, Jargol, an online shopping guide featuring independent boutiques, some user submitted, some added by Ara himself, and all of them have something interesting about them. You can search by city, by boutique type and you can even subscribe to the Jargol blog to get the latest on sale announcements and new inventory (like the above photo: Marjan Pejoski @ Doshaburi, Barcelona). And if you are going to visit a new city… it’s best to visit this site before you go, as it has a comprehensive shopping guide for cities, mostly in the US, but also around the world.

Here Ara talks to us about why he started this valuable resource, and how the internet has affected independent fashion…

How to: Plan Your Editorial Calendar

Bazaar’s 2008 Editorial Calendar

The single most important part of a blog is the content.

It might sound like a redundant statement, but without consistent, quality content, readers won’t have a reason to come back. An Editorial Calendar will not only help you decide what to post, keep you inspired, but it also helps your readers know what to expect. Magazines use editorial calendars to plan a year in advance allowing time to develop content properly. While most blogs may not need to plan posts a year in advance, having some kind plan for your posts will help save time and curb blogger’s block. And don’t be afraid, editorial calendars come in all shapes and levels of detail, you can work what’s best with minimal effort, and still reap the rewards. [Read more]

Links not only build traffic, they build a community.

One of the most important things to building my blog was by creating linkable content, when I was just starting out, and even now I’ve been around for a while, it’s always good to put my links out there in as many places for people to find my blog. It’s also a good way to get connected to other bloggers, either through active commenting, or through links, sharing traffic is always a good thing.

As part of building the IFB community, we’re starting a linking group for the IFB members.. it’s opt-in as with all aspects of IFB, and there is only on real rule: [Read more]

The Key To Success

If I had a quid for every time someone asked me what makes a successful blog, I’d be off buying new shoes this very second. Whenever someone does ask me this I always feel disappointed that I can’t offer them a solid formula but the simple truth is, I have no idea what makes a blog successful. Sometimes it just happens.

Of course, how one defines a successful blog is very much dependent on one’s definition of successful. I think a blog can be successful on many different levels.

But here are some things to consider:
